Continuing our where are they now series, today we look at the life and career of former Liverpool forward Toni Silva and find out where they are now.
Toni Silva was born in Guinea–Bissau but moved to Portugal as a child where he joined up with the Real Massamá academy before moving on to Benfica, after just 7 appearances he would make his way to England to join Fulham before moving on to Liverpool.
Played mostly on the wing, Silva finished the 2010-11 season as fourth top goalscorer at the academy with 10 goals, just behind Adam Morgan, Michael Ngoo & Raheem Sterling.
This was enough to convince Liverpool to sign him to his first professional contract and send him to Northampton Town on loan to gain first team experience, he would score 1 goal in 14 appearances for the cobblers.
After he returned from his loan spell he joined Barnsley on a free transfer, signing a two year deal, where his manager there Keith Hill commentated
There’s a lot of development we’ve got to put into this player to make him into a £3 million player and I believe we will be able to do that
Spoiler alert he would never go on to be a £3 million player, he would miss the first 4 months of the season due to injury and after only making 1 appearance at Barnsley he would move on once more on loan to Dagenham & Redbridge.
Barnsley would release him from his contract after just one season and Silva would start his globe trotting career starting with a move to CSKA Sofia where he was subjected to alleged racist abuse from Bulgarian international Veselin Minev
“He showered me with all sorts of insults; he called me monkey most often. He said I should go to pick bananas.”
After a brief stint in Turkey he returned to Portugal with C.F Uniao before moving on to Greece and then onto South Africa where he won a championship, but after falling out with Sundowns manager Mosimane he moved to Egypt with El Ittihad.
Silva would make only 7 appearances at for El Ittihad before getting his contract terminated and moving back to Europe with Romanian outfit Astra Giurgiu.
Where is he now ?
Silva now 26 years of age and already at his eleventh club and ninth country where he now plays for Kazakhstan first division side Taraz where he has scored 1 goals and got 3 assist so far in only 3 games.
