Continuing our where are they now series, today we look at the life and career of former Liverpool defender Stephen Wright and find out where they are now.
Stephen who was born in the bootle area of Liverpool is the son of former Liverpool F.C kit man John Wright who spent 15 years at the club before leaving in 2005, You can see them below pictured together in the 2001-02 squad picture.
He signed youth contract with Liverpool in 1996 turning down his boyhood club & Merseyside rival Everton, he spent the 99/00 season on loan at Crewe Alexandra and after a successful spell he returned to Anfield to make his debut in the league cup replacing Markus Babbel at half time and finished the season as an unused sub in the UEFA Cup final.
The 2001-02 was a somewhat of a breakthrough season for Wright as he makes 17 appearances in total for Liverpool and scored his only goal for the club in the Champions League against Borrusia Dortmund.
This however was not enough to cement his place at Anfield and a summer move to Sunderland soon materialised, This would prove to be the best of time for Wright’s career as he went on to spend 6 seasons with the Mackems picking up two Football championships along the way.
Unfortuantly for Wright once he left Sunderland he would find himself dropping down the leagues with spells at Coventry, Brentford & Hartlepool before dropping out of the league altogether when he moved to non league Wrexham in 2012.
He would spend two seasons at Wrexham picking up a FA Trophy winners medal along the way before moving to the Welsh league where he played with Aberystwyth Town & Rhyl.
Where is he now ?
After a spell as the youth team manager for Wrexham he would move back to where it all started and is now a talent scout for Liverpool.
He scouts for the best of under 9-13’s in North Wales, Cheshire West and Wirral area for Liverpool as he looks to discover the next gem.
