Continuing our where are they now series, today we look at the life and career of former Swiss international rightback Phillip Degen.
If Gerard Houllier liked a signing from the French league than Rafa Bentitez was fond of a free signing. Every summer Rafa would bring in at least one bosman signing and in the summer of 2008 it was the turn of Phillip Degen who was available on a free after not being offered a new one at Borrusia Dortmund.
Bentitez seemed pleased with the arrival of Degen statiting
“He is an offensive player with great energy and a winning mentality. His strength is going forward and I am confident he will be prove to be a quality addition to our squad.
To be fair to Rafa and the player that could well have turned out to be true if it was not down to some rotten luck and injuries, on his debut in a League Cup clash with Crewe Alexander he would come out the worse from a collision with Sami Hyypia which resulted in him breaking two of his ribs and puncturing his lung.
This would keep him out for two months, he would not see another game again until the League Cup came rolling back around where he would suffer a broken metatarsal after a challenge from Gareth Bale.
While on the comeback trail from that injury he would score for the reserves against Manchester United and yes you guessed it he would get another injury, yet another broken metararsal, in all Degen was at the club for 14 months before he was to start a league game.
His chance would finally come as he came for an injured Glen Johnson against Fulham however he would not see the full game out as he was to pick up a straight red card for a challenge on Clint Dempsey in a 3-1 defeat to Fulham.
He would go on to play another couple of games for Liverpool but once Roy Hodgson had come in he was soon shipped off on loan to Stuttgart and after failing to make an impact there he was later released from his contract before returning to his first club Basel where he would finish his career.
So where is he now ?
Along with his twin brother David he now works as an football agent for sbe-management and was recently involved in Aldo Kalulu move from Basel to Swansea City.
Going by his Instagram page he does look to be a busy guy but always has time for a picture with another ex-Liverpool legend.
