Continuing our where are they now series, today we look at the life and career of former English defender Paul Konchesky.
Yesterday we had a look at Roy Hodgson best signing in Raul Meireles so today it is time to look at the other end of the spectrum and check out his worst signing, and that is saying something when you realise that was the summer that Christian Poulson & Milan Jovanovic also came in.
Liverpool were on the look out for a left back that summer with only injury plagued Fabio Aurelio and youngster Jack Robinson at the club so the then manager Roy Hodgson decided to raid his old club Fulham to bring Konchesky to Liverpool for a fee in the region of £4m plus reserve team players Lauri Dalla Valle and Alex Kacaniklic.
Konchesky was 29 at the time and had signed a four year contract but as faith would have it he would not even see out one of those four years. After a particularly bad display against Stoke City the defender came under fire from loyal Reds fans which brought a venomous response from his mother who took to Facebook to say
To all you liverpool scouse scum out the never mind the cockney c..t take a real look at your team at stop living off the past the team are shit, anyone made a mistake it is the cockney c..t never should have left fulham
Roy Hodgson would be sacked in January to replaced by Kenny Dalglish who soon sent Konchesky on loan to Nottingham Forest and that would be the last we would have seen of Konchesky at Anfield.
Speaking to planetfootball about his time at Liverpool, Konchesky said
“They were difficult times but it was an experience I’ll never forget. I had the privilege of going to play for what we’ll see are the Premier League champions.
In the summer of 2011 he would make a permanent move to Leicester City where he would spend five seasons before dropping down the leagues, first to Gillingham before finishing his career in the non league first with Billericay Town and finally with East Thurrock where he announced his retirement on his Instagram page.
So where is he now ?
Since his retirement the ex England international has opened a pie & mash shop in his hometown of Essex called Konchs Kafe which is run by Paul’s mom Carol.
He has also recently returned to Billericay Town where he is now the assistant manager to former Wolves & Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara
