Continuing our where are they now series, today we look at the life and career of former Germany & Liverpool defender Markus Babbel.
Markus Babbel had done all that could be done in German football, winning multiple league and cups during his time at Bayern Munich he was looking for a fresh challenge in the summer of 2000.
Turning down the advances of Spanish giants Real Madrid, Babbel would sign for Gerard Houllier’s Liverpool side and slot straight in as right back playing 60 out of a possible 63 games in his very first season.
He would play a pivotal part in Liverpool’s defence that season as they would go on to win the treble of UEFA, League & FA Cups, the future looked bright for Liverpool with Markus Babbel in defence.
However tragedy would strike the very next season after Babbel was struck down with Guillain-Barre syndrome which effectively ended his career as an elite football player, loan moves did follow with Blackburn before he finally moved back to Germany to finish his career with Stuttgart.
So where is he now ?
After his retirement he took up coaching in his native Germany with his first managerial job coming in 2014 when he was appointed the new manager of Swiss outfit FC Luzern, he failed to win a game in his first season but the Swiss side stuck with him and he took them to a Swiss Cup semi final place and a 3rd place finish the following season.
He is now managing in Australia taking over Western Sydney Wanderers in 2018 and is due to face off against Robbie Fowler’s Brisbane Roar in November.
