Continuing our where are they now series, today we look at the life and career of former Liverpool reserve striker and Welsh u21 international Layton Maxwell.
Maxwell was born in a the little Welsh town of St.Asaph, which so happens to be the same place as another ex Red Ian Rush.
He was part of the same reserve team as Steven Gerrard, Stephen Warnock & Jamie Carragher and was highly rated at the academy, he made his Liverpool debut in a League cup game against Hull City scoring in front of the Kop in a 4-2 win.
“Not many players score at the Kop End on their Liverpool debut. It was some night after that game, but I soon came back down to earth because I was training with the reserves the following week.”
Ultimately it was never to be for Layton Maxwell who after a loan spell at Stockport County was to move on to Cardiff City as a free agent in 2010.
The move to Cardiff was the first of 10 welsh clubs that he would play for or as The Liverpool Way would put it ” he played at more Welsh clubs than a young Shirley Bassey.”
He could never hold down a regular spot at any of the Welsh clubs and ended his career with Welsh 2nd division side Aberaman Athletic in 2009.
So where is he now ?
After his retirement he became an engineer with Talk Talk and is now currently with Vodafone so if you are a Vodafone customer in Wales, if you ever any issues with your line you may just find an ex Red is sent to your house.
