Neil Critchley’s u21 side did not get off the best of starts in the EFL Trophy, losing 3-2 away to Oldham Athletic.
There was debuts for new arrivals Sepp Van Den Berg & Harvey Elliott while old faces that have yet to get their move away like Pedro Chirivella all got their start. The crowd of just over 1,500 fans had barely taken their seat when full back Necro Williams put Liverpool ahead with a thunderous strike into the top corner.
Liverpool rested on the laurels a bit after this as and Oldham came back into the game especially dangerous from set pieces, Goalkeeper Dan Atherton had came and missed a few corners and generally just was not comfortable with anything that was going high into the box.
It was night to forget for Welsh u19 international Morgan Boyes, after 20 minutes a poor pass allowed Segbe Anzankpo to capitalise and chip Atherton for Oldham’s equalizer, the next goal came only 8 minutes later from a set piece after Boyes give away a free kick which he got booked for & Iacovitti scored from the resulting delivery.
By this time Harvey Elliott & Curtis Jones had realised they were in a game and started to turn on the style and they combined just before half time to get the equalizer after a shot from Jones is blocked only for Elliott to follow up.
Second half saw Liverpool have the better chances but once Elliott and the bright Adam Lewis came off the game strung in Oldham’s direction and after another poorly defended set piece on the 80th minutes they managed to get the winner, Liverpool had one last chance in injury time after a beautiful through ball from Curtis Jones almost put Jack Bearne through.
