Gregory Vignal

In our weekly feature we take a look at the life and career of former Liverpool players and this week it is the turn of Gregory Vignal and we find out where he is now.

Gregory Vignal started his career at his hometown club Montpellier before moving to Liverpool for £500,000 as a 19-year old in the summer of 2000.

He started in the reserves but when Markus Babbell came down with Guillan-Barre syndrome, Liverpool were forced into a re-shuffle moving Jamie Carragher to right back and Vignal would slot in as left-back.

Unfortunately for Gregory Vignal he would pick up an injury in the League Cup encounter against Grimbsy Town which keep him out for the remainder of the season.

He would only go to make 4 more appearances for the club before being loaned out to Bastia, Rennes, Espanyol and Rangers before finally being released in 2005.

Gregory Vignal Portsmouth

A move to Portsmouth quickly followed where Vignal was looking to prove Reds manager Rafa Benitez wrong for letting him go.

˜The Liverpool game means everything to me. They were the club I joined when I first came to England from Montpellier.

“I won three trophies with them. I played my first Premier League game with Liverpool, my first Champions League game with Liverpool and my first UEFA Cup game with Liverpool. Everything.

“It will be an important day.

“Do I have something to prove to Liverpool? Yes and no.

‘˜I don’t have anything to prove to myself, but I want to prove something for my team-mates, the staff and the chairman. That’s why it will be an important day.’

He would make 14 League appearances for Portsmouth (more than his entire career with Liverpool) but was still released at the end of the 2005/06 season and made his return to France with a move to Lens.

In 2007–2008 he found himself back in England this time in the Championship where he played for Portsmouth’s biggest rivals Southampton, while on loan at the Saints he scored 3 goals in 20 games.

This got Gregory Vignal a move to Birmingham City where he spent two seasons before moving to Greece and finally to AS Breziers who were in the 4th division in France.

So where is he now ?
