Nabil Fekir has finally broken his silence on his failed Liverpool move, the French midfielder went into some detail on the move that failed to materialise in the summer of 2018 telling L’Equipe.
“I tried not to let it affect me but it did play on my mind, even if it was unconscious and I kept telling myself that it was just fate. I still think about it, but with no regrets
Lots of lies were told and they affected me. Especially those told about my family. It hurt them and me. Espially when you know that’s what being told is false.
“But when you are a good person in life, you always end up being happy and at peace. And today I am happy and at peace. Others are not. But lets’ not go into detail”
“What was said is not the truth. My knee is good – I had a quick medical check at Clairefontaine – my knee wasn’t even mentioned. If my knee had been in such a bad state, would Aulas have made [a huge offer to keep me]?”
“But the worst thing is the idea that people could suggest that it’s because of my family that the transfer [to Liverpool] didn’t happen. It’s a lie. But you have to live with it.”
“You want the truth? Even I don’t know – I promise you! I did my medical and then [Liverpool] decided not to sign me. At some point they wanted to have me believe it was because of my knee – but an excuse needed to be found…”
“…the medical tests that I did at Clairefontaine were very clear – my knee is perfectly fine and I feel fine. There are no issues at all with my knee.”
” What annoyed me was by bringing up this physical pseudo-concern, it affected my chances with other clubs who might have shown interest. Other players have had the same injury and didn’t have their career trajectory affected in the same way.”
“But I have no bitterness towards Liverpool. I met them and we got on brilliantly. They showed that they really wanted me. But when you surround yourself with the wrong people, it comes off badly on you.”
This suggest that it was down to his agent and possibly the fact that at the time it was also rumoured that his brother Yassin Fekir would move to Anfield with him, it is interesting to note that Yassin has moved to Real Betis this summer alongside his brother
When Fekir was asked about his former agent Bernes he said “it’s not normal to be kept informed of negotiations. My family is discreet and it’s not nice to try to split a family. It was a dark moment in my career.”
