In our weekly feature we take a look at the life and career of former Liverpool players and this week it is the turn of Erik Meijer and we find out where he is now.
Erik Meijer started his professional career with Fortuna Sittard in Holland, he would go on to change clubs every year for next 4 years with spells with Royal Antwerp, Eindhoven, Fortuna Sittard again and MVV Maastricht.
It was at Maastricht where he really made his name scoring 34 goals in just 66 games earning himself a move to Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven where he would team up with Ronaldo.
We had the chance to speak to Eric a couple of years ago and asked Eric if he thought at the time that Ronaldo would go on to be the player he would be.
Yes! The first impression he made on the first training I will never forget. He was so unbelievable good, quick and had a perfect eye for the space around him. As extra info, he was just 17 when he arrived in Eindhoven!!
After 2 years at PSV, Erik Meijer would move to Germany having a brief spell with KFC Uerdingen before getting a bigger move to Bayer Leverkusen where he was spotted by Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier.
I played 3 good seasons at Bayer Leverkusen and played a good champions league round the last year. In the bundesliga we were just behind Münich ,as always.
Gerard houllier called me: ” do you want to play for LFC, and I almost screamed,YES, YES, YES, but controlled my self:)
The timing of the arrival was an odd one as at the time Liverpool still had Fowler, Owen & Heskey at the club so Meijer was always going to find it difficult to get any game time.
on my position I had 3 English internationals to fight with. Owen, fowler, Heskey. A hell of a job.
His only goals came during a league cup outing against Hull City where the big Dutchman bagged two goals, after failing to break into the first team Meijer moved to Preston on loan before moving back to Germany with Hamburg.
He finished his career on a high while playing with Bundesliga 2 outfit Alemannia Aachen helping them to a German cup final against Werder Bremen, after finishing his playing career he would go on to coach at Alemannia Aachen before moving into a sporting director role.
Where is he now ?
Eric has joined the many ex Liverpool players who are now a pundit, working with Sky Germany where he analyzes Champions League games, he is basically the Jamie Carragher of Sky Germany.
