The Croatian centre back is set to depart to AS Roma for a fee in excess of £15m, but the timing of the move has taken some fans by surprise.
However could the summer signing of Sepp Van Den Berg have been the ready made replacement for Lovren?
If we compare the season both had in 2018/19 we can see that the Dutchman actually made two more appearances than the more experienced centre back albeit with playing 80 less minutes.
He also had the same amount of interceptions and a higher amount of tackles, however his dribbling and clearances are not as high and he does have a little bit of a way to go before he gets to the level of Lovren.
Reds boss Jurgen Klopp will also hope to have Joe Gomez available for more games this season and if needs be Brazilian Fabinho can also play at centre back.
Overall while the loss of Lovren may be a risk it is a small one considering the cover that is already at the club and worse case scenario the club only needs to get bye until January when the winter transfer window opens.
